General of the Army
Published in Paperback by Cooper Square Press (June, 2000)

A GREAT biography about a GREAT man
This book rested on my bookshelf for about two months after I received it from Amazon. Frankly, I found 700-plus pages a little daunting. But having read The Supreme Commander - Stephen Ambrose's masterful book on Ike's war years, this seemed a natural follow-up. It was especially alluring because Ike so admired Marshall. As I deem Ike a genuine hero, it was natural to be interested in his hero.

Well, I'm glad I tackled it! I rank it alongside biographical masterpieces like Edmund Morris's two-volume biography of Teddy Roosevelt and Ron Chernow's biography of Rockefeller. Simply put, this is one of the best books I've ever read.

For anyone interested in the WWII era, or generally the history of America in the first half of the 20th century, this is MUST reading.

James B. Hagerty

THE GREATEST AMERICAN NO ONE KNOWS
General George Marshall deserves to be as well know as Patton or Ike. He more than anyone else is responsible for America's victory in WWII. He could have been Surpreme Commander of all forces in Europe but out of duty and honor he stayed in Washington where he was needed. No person wielded more power during the war years except perhaps FDR. He was responsible for promoting such men as Ike, Patton, and Bradley. Who knows how history might have changed if he had sought the fame and glory that Ike received as Surpreme Commander. In this book Ed Cray follows Marshall from his childhood through his WWI and WWII service, including his later positions as Secretary of Defense and Secertary of State. I don't know of any other man who did as much in his life as Marshall. Best of all, he did it all with complete honesty and integrity. He had the absolute trust of all mjor players in WWII including FDR, Churchill, and Stalin. This book derserves to be on the shelf of all WWII buffs as well as anyone who wants to know what true leadership is about.

A Genuine American Hero
As I finished reading Mr. Crays critically detailed book of General Marshall, I could not help feel sad by the lack of recognition he received. As a truely great man he did not have to prove to anyone who was in charge. Even at the Pearl Harbor hearings the people observing stood up when he entered and left the room out of shear respect. As Winston Churchill stated about General Marshall when WWII was over " Thank You". Americans will probably never really know what a great leader, soldier, statesman, and example he truely was during such a dark time in our history. Mr. Cray does a great job in paying tribute to the man.

I enjoyed the book Feeling Light, immensely. It had a lot of useful information and gave a definite program for the reader to use. Not a diet, but a complete change of lifestyle. Excellent book.

Feeling Light:The Holistic Solution to Permanent Weight Loss
This book was so wonderful to write. I live the Feeling Light Program and teach others how to follow it every day of my life. There is so much to learn about yourself from healing deep within. When you change how you interact with your self and those around you issues with food dissolve. It's so important to feel at peace, speak your truth, and honor yourself. I hope this book helps you to get on and stay with a powerful path of healing. You can learn more about me by checking out healing4u.com. Many Blessings, Shoshanna

The "TOTAL WELLNESS"
This book is not just about Weight Loss, it's about Total Wellness!! As it was mentioned several times in the book, the focus is on getting healthy and that will trigger the weight loss by itslef.

The book is very well written and structured with clear explanations of everything.

The book offers the program of total wellness combining all the revolutionary methods. I was coming up with some kind of the same health program for myself and I found everything I wanted to know in this book. Note that I don't have any weight problem and still this books makes a difference and it will make a big difference in your life getting you were you want to be in terms of not only the wellness but your life itself! Whether you have a problem with your weight or not, whether you consider yourself healthy or not, buy this book. It costs only couple bucks but contains million dollar information for you to be the one you want to be. The book is full of knowledge that is not easy to find! I just want to thank the authors for sharing this kind of knowledge.

I picked up this book in Shoshanna's Wellness Center after first acupuncture treatment. I am just fortunate to live in the same area where she has an office and receive acupuncture treatments. Not to mention that I received one treatment so far but felt amazingly much better already right after the first treatment.

Again, the book is full of knowledge authors are sharing with us and it amazes me that you can get this kind of knowledge for only ... bucks!

Be well...

A Lonely Kind of War: Forward Air Controller, Vietnam
Published in Hardcover by Presidio Pr (August, 1989)
Author: Marshall Harrison
Average review score:

Climb Into the Cockpit and Strap-In.
Outstanding first person narrative seats readers in the cockpit of Vietnam era reconnaissance aircraft involved in combat. Absolutely one of the five best books I've ever read. Harrison opens Chapter 1 by emersing the reader into the radio chatter of an aircraft fire mission. His flowing and economical style enable the reader to actually place themselves into the scenario. From there the book continues to ride like a modern day Clancy novel. From directing fire missions deep within North Vietnam and Laos to dropping commando teams by parachute behind enemy lines in light aircraft only designed for a pilot and observer. Harrison spins his tales as if he's sitting comfortably in your living room tracing flight manuevers through the air with his hands. A fabulous book that, unfortunately, read too quickly. May slow down some readers who are not famililar with aviation technical terms or slang.

simply excellent - both in style and content
This has to be one of the best books on combat aviation in Viet Nam. I've read a lot of book about this subject, but Harrison's ability to describe the life of a Forward Air Controller left me wishing that he had put more in print. There is almost a kinship that develops during the book - you share the sweat and I have seen no one else write about aerial manuevers as vividly. His style sems to assume that the reader has a basic understanding of aviation; he gives vivid descriptions of flight without excessive digression to explain the manuevers.

I won't loan this book to anyone.

Buy it.

The Definitive Book on the FAC
I cannot count how many times I've read this book. A very well written account of the making of a forward air controller (FAC) and his tour of duty in Vietnam. This book is filled with non-stop aerial combat interspersed with wit and humor. I swear you can hear the engines, the explosions, the radio chatter and the myriad sounds of aerial combat. This is the definitive book on the FAC. Harrison's vividly writes about the inter-service rivalries, fighter pilot and elite unit culture. Vietnam had them all, from the ticket punchers to the true professionals, the "conscientious objectors" to the patriots, balls-out young men and know it alls, politicians and name dropers, clowns and cowboys, the scared and all too brave. Harrison's seen and flown with all of them. You will not put this book down once you start reading it. Harrison will hold you in suspense screaming, laughing and dying over and over. You will read it again and again in between browsing the web about the FAC and that "war" fought on the other side of the fence in Laos. How good is this book? I have seen precious copies churned out of copier machines circulating with pilots of the Philippine Air Force, 15th Strike Wing, one of the few users of the OV-10 Bronco in combat in the 21st century. This book should be made into a movie.

Champions Are Raised, Not Born: How My Parents Made Me a Success

Authors: Summer Sanders and Melinda Marshall

Summer Sanders the queen of queens!
This book is so well written becuase of the beautiful, intelligent, outstanding women behind all of it, Summer Sanders! You have written such a good book that teaches parents about raising a child not competitevely but well! Thank you so much!

You must read this book!
I wanted to preview a few chapters of the book before I gave it to my 10 year old daughter for Christmas. Needless to say, I read it from cover to cover. Summer Sanders writes, in plain English, about her parents' roll in her successful swimming career. This book should be required reading for any parent who has a child who participates in sports!

Overachievers
I really enjoyed this book and Summer has helped me keep my daughter's goals in perspective. I have a 9 year old over achiever who doesn't need pushed but needs encourgement and wants us as parents to comment on her achievements. I have learned that not only verbalizing our comments but showing her through our actions that we approve of her achievements. I learned that through this book. I picked this book up because of the attachment to swimming, but it definately carries over into all corners of our lives.

Clashes: Air Combat over North Vietnam 1965-1972
Published in Hardcover by United States Naval Inst. (June, 1997)
Author: Marshall L., III Michel
Average review score:

One of the best books on SEA air combat
This is the best book on air combat in SEA during the VietNam War that I've ever seen (and I've seen a few). Michel mixes discussion at the strategic level (the decisions about what targets to hit and how hard)with the actual pilot-level action that occurred. Mr. Michel unashamedly approaches the two disparate theories held by the USAF and the USN in how to handle air-to-air combat and strike mission planning. The USAF saw the air-to-air loss rates as a problem with the technology. The USN saw the loss rates as a problem with pilot training. Not surprisingly, the USN loss ratios improved dramatically a year after the creation of its TopGun air-to-air combat academy, whereas the USAF saw only a minimal improvement in its missile technology.

One interesting point is this: even though both the USAF and the USN flew the F-4 Phantom, the Navy missiles wouldn't work on the USAF planes because of a difference in the launch rails. The problem was in the way that the Sidewinder seeker was cooled prior to launch. The Navy took one approach to solve the problem and the USAF took another. The Navy did indeed have a better missile, and when one USAF wing commander demanded that he be supplied with Navy Sidewinders for air-to-air combat, he was severely disappointed to find out that he couldn't have them due to disparate technologies.

This isn't a "There I was at 20,000 feet.." type of book. Its more of a "Oyster Flight was on BarCap at 20,000 feet on Route Package VI when Red Crown vectored them to a pair of MiG-21s launching from Phuc Yen..." type of book. Still, it is very exciting reading for avaition enthusiasts and air combat students. There is a careful analysis of each engagement and diagrams are included to illustrate typical strike formations and ECM coverage zones. Very well done.

Good on the "bad guys" as well.
Michell not only covers the US effort, he also reports on what the North Vietnamese did. Though this story is not part of his main narrative, he shows that the NVN Air Force fought hard, learned from their mistakes, and tried to make the best use possible from their MiGs and SAMs. Two points Michell never makes : first, any NVN pilot who successfully bailed out would land in his home country and would be able to get back into a cockpit; US pilots could only do so if they were rescued, a very complex operation that might involve additional losses. Second, if any NVN pilot did decide to go beyond the GCI-controlled airspace, they might be tempted to defect. Possible? Couldn't rule it out : NVN ground troops defected, and a couple of North Korean pilots have done so over the years. This book is highly recommended not only for those interested in the Vietnam War, but also those interested in the development of aerial tactics and weaponry.

"Clashes" - an engrossing chronicle
In about 300 pages, "Clashes" packs an engrossing account of air-to-air combat during the Vietnam War. This detailed, analytical chronicle of the air war from 1965 to 1972 has the vividness of a first person narrative. Other pluses include a good index, glossary, bibliography, and clear diagrams and charts.

This book explodes the notion that U.S. pilots' woes over the skies of Vietnam stemmed from political meddling from Washington. Such meddling existed and caused confusion, but Mitchel demonstrates that the big problems were of the military's own making:

* Poor weapons. The story of the sad performance of the Vietnam War era Sidewinder and Sparrow air-to-air missiles is well known. Mitchel's depiction of these failures in scores of air-to-air encounters makes a poignant effect of the reader. * Insufficient training. To meet manpower requirements, the Air Force, according to Mitchel, cut back on air-to-air training and lowered standards. * Improper tactics. Mitchel takes the Air Force to task for clinging to the "fluid four" fighter formation, even in the face of evidence that this formation put U.S. pilots at a severe tactical disadvantage. The Navy's "loose deuce" fighter formation was rejected...because it was a Navy fighter formation.

Such a short summary does "Clashes" an injustice. Like other good military histories, this book leaves the reader convinced that courage and suppleness of mind and body are a warrior's most important weapons. I recommend "Clashes" to fellow military history buffs. My one "picknit" is that Mitchel does not identify the pilots in the numerous air-to-air encounters by name.

Game Face: What Does a Female Athlete Look Like?
Published in Hardcover by Random House (26 June, 2001)
Authors: Jane Gottesman, Penny Marshall, and Geoffrey Biddle
Average review score:

A great book to own and give to others!
Gameface is a terrific, fun, and interesting book for people of all ages.

I am 39 and loved reading the essays, the history, and the photos of women in action. I was inspired!

Last night, when some family friends were over, people who are more "intellectuals" than "sports enthusiasts" -- they wouldn't leave because EVERYONE IN THEIR FAMILY -- AGES 12 TO 65 WANTED THEIR CHANCE TO READ THE BOOK!!

The 64 year old father, an amateur photographer, wanted to look at every page and commented on the vast array of excellently selected pictures.

The 65 year old mother said she was just beginning to go to a gym and liked the pictures of the women and girls, young and old.

Their 19 year old basketball playing daughter loved the book -- she was looking at the pictures, reading the essays, commenting on women, sports, asking questions, etc. Watching her, I was convinced that I would buy this book to give to people I know... for it really strikes a chord with people to see girls and women in a positive light, playing hard, looking like real people! (with wonderful quotes next to the pictures.)

And their 12 year old son, he wanted his turn too -- he thought the book was "cool" and talked about the girls on the teams he is on -- and how they are very serious!

I highly recommend this book to entire families -- and certainly women of my age who played sports in high school and today try to stay active. It is a terrific! (I hope to see the exhibit in Washington DC too -- or when it travels to my city)

Inspiring Content; Great Art
These amazing photos of women in action not only honor women who've broken barriers, they contribute to a new definition of "woman" and "girl." The book goes way beyond the ordinary -- it includes pictures of famous athletes and athletes we've never heard of, young stars and veteran competitors. The text adds terrific insight into what the subjects were thinking; my favorite was the story of a woman who went out for her high school football team and told her parents the day of the game that she wouldn't be sitting with them in the stands. I'm buying "Game Face" for every teenage girl - maybe every woman - I know!

Go Girl Go
For every woman who loves sports and the women who actively persue them this is a must book! Pictures and information are outstanding, informative and thought provoking. Everything from our newest heroes to women in the past that some of us may not have even recognized. I enjoyed every page of this book and have even ordered it as gifts for friends who like me love to see females who excel in their fields.

Julie
Published in Paperback by Zondervan (01 April, 2002)
Author: Catherine Marshall
Average review score:

Moutains and Valleys
"Julie", written by Catherine Marshall, was a book that I enjoyed reading. It was a realistic account of a girl's life during a couple of her teenage years. Julie and her family moved to Alderton, in an effort to get away from some problems they had run into in their old town of Timmeton. Julie's father buys the town's newspaper business, to try to bring it back to life. The family suffers through many trials such as poverty, flood damage, and disagreements with other town folks. Because the story is realistic, it provoked different emotions within me as I read along. I felt a love for Julie and an appreciation for those who were involved in her life. I thought this was a good book that showed how important God is in a person's life, and how things seem to work out when people stick together during good times and bad, mountains and valleys.

A wonderful story of family, romance, and suspense
I read "Christy" several years ago and watched every episode of the television series when it was aired. I enjoyed "Christy" so much that I was anxious to read "Julie." I just finished reading "Julie" and it was excellent. The story is captivating and will keep you interested until the very end. Once I got to the last 100 pages, I couldn't put it down. Catherine Marshall has a way of allowing the reader into the hearts, minds, and emotions of her lead characters. I highly recommend this book. Curl up in a comfy chair with some hot chocolate and enjoy!

Wonderfully delightful adventures with the Wallace family
After seeing the television series "Christy" I was very interested in reading more of Catherine Marshall's book. I went to my local library and found Julie. Julie is the daughter of a former preacher, now editor of a the local paper in Alderton, Pennsylvania. The story is set during the heart of the depression in the 1930's. Julie Wallace is an 18 year old senior and an up and coming reporter for her father's extremly small paper. Julie now becoming a fine woman is dealing with her emontions of both a family and romantic nature. The main conflict in the story is within Julie herself, but the physical climax is when the area dam breaks. After this the whole town must pull together and become one again. Julie is a wonderful book, so much so that I couldn't put it down. I'd recommend it to anyone with the soul for old fashion romance and time for a good book

Coaching for Leadership: How the World's Greatest Coaches Help Leaders Learn
Published in Hardcover by Jossey-Bass/Pfeiffer (15 May, 2000)
Authors: Marshall Goldsmith, Laurence Lyons, Alyssa Freas, and Robert Witherspoon
Average review score:

Comprehensive and simplistic
This is a comprehensive guide to leadership coaching. It's a review of many authors' previous work or ideas so it has appeal
for the seasoned coach although I did not find much new material. It is probably better for 'new to the field' coaches who want to know a lot of information in one source. The chapters are short and easy to read. For seasoned coaches it is helpful to pick and choose. I especially liked Nancy Adler's chapter on Coaching Global Executives: Women Succeeding in a World Beyond Here. She ended with a good reason for executives to chose coaching.

Covers all aspects of coaching leaders, including ethics
While attending Linkage's Knowledge Management Conference,I heard Marshall Goldsmith speak about some of the executives he has coached, and was intrigued by his money-back guarantee: if the coworkers of the executive being coached aren't satisfied with results, then Marshall doesn't get paid!

How many consultants can make that offer?

At any rate, Goldsmith has edited (and contributed chapters) to "Coaching for Leadership" along with Laurence Lyons and Alyssa Freas. Coaching high-impact, ambitious, hard-driving executives is not quite the same process as coaching under-performing employees, so this book probably has a smaller audience than say, "Coaching for Dummies". However, executive coaching is all about moving individuals into behaviors that sustain business, and there is lots of useful information for the coaches of non-leaders. There is also a very interesting (and very short) chapter on, "Coaching from Below" by Deepak (Dick) Sethi. Most of us could probably use that information!

What do Executive Coaches Do? This Book Told Me.
I became curious about "Executive Coaching" after reading an article in Forbes Magazine last year. The article showed astounding salaries (some of these coaches make as much money in a day as many of us make in a year) and major companies (General Electric, Sony, Johnson & Johnson, Ernst & Hewlett-Packard) using "executive coaches".

Well this book tells you what these "executive coaches" do and I found it fascinating!
